The cricket club was established in 1880, and its members, including the influential figure Bobby Buckle, decided to establish a football club to keep active during the winter months. The new football club initially played matches on Tottenham Marshes, a large open space in North London, and quickly began to establish itself in the local sporting community.



2. Spurs was originally named Hotspur Football Club

When the club was first formed in 1882, it was named Hotspur Football Club, after the character Sir Henry Percy, nicknamed "Hotspur," from William Shakespeare's play "Henry IV."
