Over the course of three decades or more, the Premier League has seen its fair share of English managers take the reins at several fantastic EPL teams.
Many of these elite coaches have successfully navigated the difficult challenges the competition typically poses and sometimes gone on to achieve great things.
Even in a league that became saturated with managerial prowess from overseas, a select band of homegrown talent have created a lasting legacy. But who are the best English Premier League Managers of all time?

7. Eddie Howe
Eddie Howe has managed two Premier League clubs to date. He led AFC Bournemouth to the top flight after promotion from the Championship in 2015 and then transformed the club into a Premier League mainstay. In 2021, Howe made the bold move to join current club Newcastle United and its billionaire Saudi regime.
Among the best English Premier League Managers of all-time, Howe boasts a best-place finish of fourth whilst at St James Park as his side secured Champions League soccer at the end of their 2022/23 campaign. He has also been named Premier League Manager of the Month a total of five times.
6. Alan Curbishley
As one of the best English Premier League Managers of all-time, Alan Curbishley guided Charlton Athletic to promotion from the old First Division in 1998 and remained at The Valley until 2006. He also managed at West Ham United for two years from 2006 and even rescued them from relegation during the 2007/08 season.
Curbishley finished as high as seventh in the Premier League during the 2003/04 campaign with Charlton Athletic and at one stage even threatened to secure a Champions League spot. He was also named Premier League Manager of the Month three times.
5. Sir Bobby Robson
In the fifth spot of our list of the best English Premier League Managers of all time is the former national team manager Bobby Robson. Robson took the helm at Newcastle United in 1999 and stabilised the club's performance across five years before finally announcing his retirement in 2004.
Finishes of fourth, third, and fifth places between 2002 and 2004 propelled Newcastle United back into contention for European soccer qualification. Whilst at St James Park, he was awarded Premier League Manager of the Month on six separate occasions.
4. Roy Hodgson
Roy Hodgson managed a host of Premier League clubs from way back in 1997 to as recently as 2024. During that time, he took charge of a wide range of teams such as Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Liverpool, West Brom, Watford and Crystal Palace.
Among the best English Premier League Managers of all-time, Hodgson’s best place finish came whilst at Ewood Park with his Blackburn Rovers side ending up sixth following the close of a successful 1997/98 campaign. Perhaps his biggest accolade was the awarding of a prestigious LMA Manager of the Year honour in 2010.
3. Sam Allardyce
As one of the greatest English Premier League managers in history, Sam Allardyce oversaw a total of eight EPL teams including the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United and West Ham United to name a few. He was famed for constructing sides that were resolute, hard to beat and often contained surprising elements of flair.
At the end of the 2004/05 season, he masterminded Bolton’s highest sixth-place finish which was level on points with Liverpool as El Hadji Diouf went on to score nine goals. Allardyce was awarded Premier League Manager of the Month six times whilst at The Reebok Stadium and with The Hammers.
2. Kevin Keegan
As one of the most renowned English Premier League managers ever, Kevin Keegan worked with three different clubs from the competition's beginning in 1992 until 2008.
He took charge of First Division Newcastle United and successfully brought them up into the Premier League ready for its inaugural 1992/93 season. Less notably, Keegan also led Fulham and Manchester City during his sixteen-year managerial career.
He came incredibly close to winning the Premier League in 1996 when his energetic and often overly excitable Newcastle United side pushed eventual Champions Manchester United to the limit in a title race. Ultimately they fell short towards the end of their campaign and Alex Ferguson's team were victorious.
1. Harry Redknapp
Harry Redknapp managed numerous top-flight clubs over the course of two decades in the Premier League including West Ham United, Portsmouth, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
Widely regarded as one of the best English Premier League managers in history, he once recorded a fourth-place finish in the Premier League at the end of 2007/08 which led to Champions League qualification for Tottenham.
It was an immense achievement that saw Redknapp named Premier League Manager of the Year. Only Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson have overseen more Premier League matches than him.
