Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji has lauded his team's performance after they triumphed against Manchester United in the Community Shield, securing the trophy with a dramatic 7-6 victory on penalties.
Alejandro Garnacho broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute but Bernardo Silva levelled the score seven minutes later as the match ended 1-1 at full time.
Speaking to ITV, Akanji reflected on the match, noting the importance of his penalty kick, which he had planned to take straight down the middle.
"I let the others shoot first because obviously when you miss a penalty [in the Euros], you don't go into the next one with that much confidence," Akanji explained. He revealed that he had practiced this approach in training, and it paid off as he successfully converted his spot-kick.
Akanji praised the contribution of teammates, highlighting the penalty prowess of goalkeeper Ederson and striker Erling Haaland, who are known for their confidence and skill in such high-pressure situations.
"Ederson is probably the best penalty taker in our team, Erling as well. When Ederson takes the penalty, I know it is a goal," Akanji said.
The Community Shield win marks a significant achievement for Akanji, who noted that it was his first time lifting the trophy. "It is a great start to the season. I haven't won the Community Shield yet, so I'm really happy that I got this trophy as well," he said.
Akanji expressed excitement for the future, emphasising the team’s determination to build on this success as they look forward to the rest of the season.
Manchester City's victory in the Community Shield sets a positive tone for their 2024-25 campaign, and Akanji's enthusiasm underscores the squad's readiness to pursue further honours in the months ahead.
