Amorim Reflects on Fernandes, Fitness Challenges, and Growing Pains

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim shared his candid thoughts after his side’s 3-2 Europa League win over Bodø/Glimt. Despite the result, Amorim stressed the challenges of transitioning into his new role, the importance of player fitness, and the influence of key figures like Bruno Fernandes.

On Bruno Fernandes' Vital Role

Amorim lauded Fernandes' tactical awareness and ability to influence the game. "You can feel he is the most experienced player," Amorim noted while speaking to TNT Sport.

He praised the Portuguese midfielder’s ability to adapt to the demands of the game, especially against opponents using a back four. "Bruno is the best one switching play – he is a midfielder with the ball in front, and that’s crucial for us."

By contrast, he highlighted the challenge for other players adjusting to their roles, singling out Mason Mount. "Mason always has his back to goal, which makes it hard," Amorim explained.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Matchdays

When asked about his emotions heading into games, Amorim admitted to a mix of excitement and nerves. "I get anxious because I don’t know what will happen. We are trying to see different things," he said, adding that his unfamiliarity with the squad made every game unpredictable. His comments revealed the delicate balance of managing expectations while navigating the unique dynamics of a team still adjusting to his methods.

Fitness Woes and Tactical Adjustments

Reflecting on the physical demands of the Bodø/Glimt match, Amorim acknowledged the toll on his players. "I felt Rasmus Højlund was dead. Antony, coming back from injury, had to go off. We did four substitutions because of fitness," he explained.

When asked about the upcoming Everton clash, Amorim was direct. "The result! That’s the most important thing," he said. He noted improvements in ball control and pressing from his debut against Ipswich but acknowledged that squad rotation would be key.

A Team in Transition

Amorim’s comments offer a glimpse into the evolving identity of Manchester United under his leadership. With fitness concerns mounting and players still adapting to his system, one question looms: Can United find consistency before the season’s challenges mount further?

As the Red Devils prepare for Everton at home on Sunday, Amorim will hope his vision begins to take root, blending tactical discipline with the resilience United fans expect.
