Arsenal Salvage a Draw with Brighton After Rice's Red Card
Arsenal fought to a 1-1 draw with Brighton in an intense North London encounter marked by Declan Rice's controversial red card. Despite taking an early lead through Kai Havertz, Arsenal's pursuit of a win was hampered after Rice was sent off for a second yellow card in the 49th minute.
Arsenal seemed poised for victory when Havertz expertly lobbed Brighton's Bart Verbruggen to give the Gunners a 38th-minute lead. However, the game shifted dramatically following Rice's dismissal for delaying a free-kick, a decision that left Arsenal playing with ten men.
Brighton capitalised on their numerical advantage, levelling the score in the 58th minute. Joao Pedro scored from a rebound after Yankuba Minteh's shot was parried by Arsenal’s David Raya. Both sides had late chances to claim all three points, with Havertz’s effort saved by Verbruggen and Brighton's Yasin Ayari denied by Raya.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta expressed frustration over the match's turning point. Speaking to BBC MOTD, Arteta said: "Overall when we played against 11 v 11 we deserved to win the game and 11 v 10 we deserved to win the game. We lost two points."
He voiced his discontent with the officiating, noting: "I was amazed. In the first half when the opponents did that they didn't get any booking. He makes the call by law in a non-critical area of the pitch... be consistent. If that is the case they should have a man sent off and then it is 10 v 10."
Despite the setback, Arteta praised his team’s resilience, adding, "Amazing, the team and the reaction of the crowd [after going a man down]. We created two big chances one v one and we should have won the game."
On a brighter note, Arteta also commented on Arsenal’s recent signing of Raheem Sterling, expressing optimism: "Very happy with all the signings we have made. There was an opportunity and I know him very well. He can give us a lot."
With the draw, Arsenal continue their season with mixed feelings, having to settle for a point after a dramatic shift in the game’s dynamics.
