De Jong has adapted well to life at Camp Nou, says ex-Netherlands midfield ace.
Frenkie de Jong should be pleased with debut season at Barcelona, says ex-Los Cules star De Boer.
Ronald de Boer has lavished praise on Frenkie de Jong, adding that the Dutch midfielder has the qualities to replace Sergio Busquets at Barcelona. Netherlands international De Jong joined Barca from Ajax last summer for a reported fee of €75million, and has often been criticised by fans for his performances at the Camp Nou. But, Blaugranas legend De Boer has no doubt his compatriot is heading in the right direction with the Spanish giants compared to how defender Matthijs de Ligt has fared at Juventus this season. "People said he didn't reach the level he reached with Ajax last season in Europe or with the national team," De Boer told BarcaBlog. "But not everyone can say that they play so many minutes with such a strong team, so I think he's doing well.
More: PSG ace Neymar will be heading nowhere this summer. "You see how another young player like De Ligt had a harder time, while everyone thought he would play regularly from the start. "He is doing very well when you consider that this is his first season." De Boer added: "If he's going to play as a central midfielder, I'm sure he'll be successful. "He is a controller, you should not ask him to score 20 goals, he is not such a player. "I am sure he will be a great successor to Busquets in the future." De Boer won the LaLiga title with Barcelona in 1998-99 before securing a move to Scottish club Rangers.
