Barcelona continued their dominant start to the La Liga season with a convincing 3-1 victory over city rivals Espanyol. This solidified their position at the top of the table and extended their lead over Real Madrid to nine points, although their bitter rivals have a game in hand following last week's el Clasico defeat.
Under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick, the Catalan giants continue to showcase their attacking prowess and depth, reinforcing their status as title contenders.
The match kicked off with an electrifying atmosphere, and it didn't take long for Barcelona to assert their dominance. Just 12 minutes in, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal made an impressive impact, delivering a superb cross with the outside of his foot that Dani Olmo expertly converted, hitting the underside of the crossbar before the ball crossed the line for the opener.
Barcelona’s momentum continued to build as they doubled their lead in the 23rd minute. Another young talent, Marc Casado, threaded a perfectly timed pass behind the Espanyol defence, allowing captain Raphinha to make a well-timed run and slot the ball home with finesse. The hosts were on the front foot, dictating the pace and rhythm of the game.
Espanyol, however, showed resilience and had two goals ruled out for narrow offside calls, illustrating the fine margins in football. Their best chance came when full-back Omar el Hilali set up Jofre Carreras, but the VAR intervened to deny the visitors a potential equaliser.
Moments later, Olmo struck again, unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the box that soared into the net, making it 3-0 for Barcelona before halftime.
The second half saw Espanyol push for a way back into the match. Early on, Alvaro Tejero had a goal disallowed, again due to a close-offside decision. However, the visitors' persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when captain Javi Puado found the net, sweeping in at the far post to reduce the deficit to 3-1. This goal breathed life into Espanyol’s performance as they sought to build on their newfound momentum.
Despite Espanyol’s improvement, Barcelona remained the superior side throughout the match, controlling possession and creating more scoring opportunities. The win marked Espanyol’s 27th consecutive derby without a victory against their local rivals, a statistic that reflects the ongoing dominance of Barcelona in this rivalry.
With this victory, Barcelona continued their impressive form, having won 11 of their 12 league matches under Flick and maintaining a remarkable run of six consecutive wins across all competitions, during which they scored 24 goals.
As they prepare to face Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday, Barca will look to build on this momentum and keep their title aspirations alive.
In a day of competitive fixtures, Atletico Madrid also kept pace in the title race with a 2-0 win over Las Palmas, closing the gap to Real Madrid in the standings. But for the Blaugrana, it was another successful chapter in what promises to be an exciting season.
