West Ham United claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over Manchester United at London Stadium, thanks to an injury-time penalty by Jarrod Bowen.
The result eased pressure on West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui but raised further questions around United manager Erik ten Hag, whose team remains in the bottom half of the Premier League standings.
United dominated the first half, creating multiple chances but failing to convert. Alejandro Garnacho hit the crossbar in the opening minutes and unsurprisingly Diogo Dalot missed an open goal. Despite their control, United couldn’t find the net, allowing West Ham to regroup.
Lopetegui’s tactical changes after halftime saw Crysencio Summerville score in the 74th minute, finishing Danny Ings' rebounded effort to put West Ham ahead. Although Casemiro’s late header equalised, a controversial VAR intervention awarded West Ham a penalty in the final moments, with Bowen calmly converting past Andre Onana.
Ten Hag expressed frustration with the penalty decision, while the Premier League clarified on social media that “sufficient contact” justified the call.
United’s missed opportunities leave them in 14th place with just three wins from nine matches. Meanwhile, Lopetegui’s West Ham climbs above United in the league, hoping to build on this win after a challenging start to the season.
