The Blues registered their 9th win in 12 league games, keeping their spot at the top of the English top-flight table ahead of next weekend’s meeting with Manchester United.
N’golo Kante said it was key that Chelsea returned to winning ways after his left-footed effort helped the west London club secure a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League.
The France midfield marshal made a brilliant run from the middle of the park before curling the ball into the net of his former club at the King Power stadium.
This was after defender Antonio Rudiger opened the scoring with a glancing looping header in the 14th minute. And then, substitute Christian Pulisic wrapped up the win in the 71st as Thomas Tuchel’s Blues extended their lead at the top of the league table to four points.
Following the match, Kante couldn’t contain the huge smile across his face as he expressed his delight.
‘I was happy to score and with the performance of the team.’
‘It was a good goal and I’m happy with that,’ Kante told BBC Sport. ‘I anticipated the pass of Reece (James). When he gave me the ball I had space in front of me.
‘I tried to run at the defenders and look for the pass, but it was open for the shot, so I (took the) shot.
‘It’s always special to play against Leicester,’ he added. ‘It was an important game for us after the international break to come back with a win.
‘We started the game very well, and I was happy to score and with the performance of the team.’
Kante was pleased with Chelsea’s ‘effort’ to keep another clean sheet as they reduced Leicester‘s goal threat, and he is not getting carried away, acknowledging that there is a long way to go in the campaign.
‘The season is long. We are still in the first period of the season. We look to win games week after week, that’s the way. We don’t know what will happen, it’s still early in the season, but we are in a good way and we need to carry on.
‘We need to work match after match if we are to achieve great things at the end of the season. The Premier League is very competitive so we have to keep going and keep working hard.’
