Mason Mount scored his first two goals of the 2022-23 campaign at Villa Park as Chelsea continued Graham Potter's unbeaten start as Blues boss.
Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount said during midweek after their win against AC Milan in the Champions League that his next objective was to score in his next game for the Blues, and he did.
The England international, who has found his form, scored a brace against Aston Villa on Sunday as Graham Potter’s side secured a 2-0 win at Villa Park to move closer to the top three.
Mount was gifted an opener when defender Tyrone Mings' failed headed clearance fell to him for a simple close-range finish in the 6th minute. And Mount scored his second from a 25-yard free-kick as Potter extended his unbeaten run to six games since replacing Thomas Tuchel as manager at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are currently in the fourth spot in the English top flight table, four points behind third-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.
'I have to keep focused.'
"These are the games you have to win and we stuck it out - we needed a big game today,” Chelsea goalscorer Mount told Sky Sports.
"We have to keep pushing and keep winning games - that's our goal to finish as high as we can. Today was not the best performance and we're not happy with it but come away with a 2-0 win.
"Kepa was on fire and his quick saves kept us in the game. He has been brilliant over the last couple of weeks."
When asked what he thought of scoring twice in front of England manager Gareth Southgate, who was present at the Stadium, Mount replied: "I have to just keep focused on doing well for the club.
"We know there's a massive World Cup around the corner and you want to play as well as you can going into it and hopefully get picked."
