Liverpool have announced the signing of Italian winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus for a fee of £10 million. The 26-year-old expressed his excitement about joining the Reds, saying he is "so happy" to move to Anfield and "can't wait to get started" with his new club.
Chiesa, who has signed a four-year deal, brings his experience and versatility to Liverpool's already dynamic forward line. Known for his blistering pace and technical ability, Chiesa can play on both wings and as a second striker, offering manager Arne Slot various tactical options.
A Forward with Rich Football Heritage
Chiesa is the son of Enrico Chiesa, a former Italy striker who enjoyed a prolific career in Serie A. Federico began his football journey at Fiorentina, where he quickly rose through the youth ranks before making his senior debut at just 18 years old. His talent and performances caught the eye of Juventus, where he moved in 2020 and had an impressive debut season.
The Setback of Injuries
Chiesa's progress, however, was hampered by a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in early 2022, which sidelined him for 10 months. Since returning to action, he has struggled to regain his best form and fitness, scoring only 11 goals in 54 appearances for Juventus. Despite these challenges, Liverpool see the potential to revive Chiesa's career at Anfield.
Why the £10 Million Price Tag?
The relatively low transfer fee of £10 million has raised eyebrows, given Chiesa's talent. With his contract set to expire next summer, Juventus chose to sell now rather than risk losing him for free. New Juventus manager Thiago Motta's preference for a high-pressing style also factored into the decision, as Chiesa was not seen as a key player in Motta’s plans.
What Chiesa Brings to Liverpool
Liverpool fans can look forward to Chiesa's speed and ability to create chances out of nothing. His versatility means he could be deployed on either wing or even as a second striker, complementing stars like Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz. However, there are concerns about his injury record and whether he can adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League.
A Calculated Gamble
While some view the signing as a risky move due to Chiesa’s recent injury history, others see it as a shrewd investment. If Chiesa can stay fit and rediscover his best form, he could become a key asset for Liverpool in their pursuit of domestic and European success.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: "Chiesa is someone who can help us for the short term and Mamardashvili is, I think, one of the examples where this club did in the past very good that they also look at the future, long-term future of the club – and that's why we signed him."
