Ex-Liverpool Midfielder Danny Murphy Reckons Ivan Toney Will Be a Good Weapon for Man United
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Manchester United could significantly boost their chances of securing a top-four finish by signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
Murphy, who closely analysed United's recent performances, particularly highlighted the team's ongoing struggles with goalscoring, despite some promising displays.
"Joshua Zirkzee has made a dream start at Manchester United and looks a wonderful talent," Murphy told the Daily Mail. "But sorry to disappoint United fans, he is not going to be the answer to their goalscoring problems."
The ex-Spurs star Murphy praised Zirkzee's strength and skill but emphasised that he is not a traditional centre forward. "The Dutchman likes to come to the ball and is more comfortable as a No. 10 or wide. His scoring record at Bologna was a goal every four games—not great."
Murphy stressed the importance of a genuine No. 9 for United, suggesting Toney as the ideal candidate. "Unless United go for a genuine No. 9 like Ivan Toney in the last couple of weeks of the transfer window, I think you can discount their top four prospects," he warned.
Toney, known for his "swagger and Premier League experience," could be the key to United's success, according to Murphy. "If Brentford are willing to let him go for £50 million, it would be a no-brainer in my view for Ten Hag to get him."
Murphy concluded by reiterating the urgency of United's need for a proven goalscorer. "Without an investment in Toney or a similar striker, who will puff out their chest and make Old Trafford their goalscoring stage, it is hard to make a case for them doing enough to guarantee to qualify for the Champions League."
