Spurs Rally in Second Half to Defeat Aston Villa 4-1
Tottenham came alive in the second half to secure an emphatic 4-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, overturning a halftime deficit to reignite their top-four hopes. Spurs were trailing 1-0 after Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers scored in the 32nd minute, taking advantage of a shaky start by Tottenham.
But the break seemed to work wonders for the home side, who returned with a renewed intensity. Brennan Johnson struck quickly in the 49th minute, assisted by Son Heung-Min, levelling the score and setting the stage for an onslaught.
Dominic Solanke then took the spotlight with a brace in quick succession, scoring in the 75th and 79th minutes with assists from Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison.
Solanke’s first was a clinical finish, capitalising on Kulusevski’s clever pass, while his second—a deft dink over the keeper after a sharp through-ball from Richarlison—was a moment of individual brilliance that lifted the crowd to their feet.
In stoppage time, James Maddison sealed the win with a precise shot in the 96th minute, bringing the score to a decisive 4-1 and wrapping up a commanding second-half performance by Tottenham.
Reflecting on the win, Solanke told Sky Sports: “We stuck with it. Going down a goal could have thrown us off, but today, we regrouped and adapted. When we play like this, we’re capable of scoring plenty, and today we showed that.”
For Solanke and Spurs, it was all about the second half. Down at the break, they regrouped and returned ready to adapt to Villa’s game plan. “At halftime, we had time to reset, figure out what wasn’t working,” Solanke explained. “We believe we can score plenty—and today it all came together.”
Solanke’s drought-breaking goals couldn’t have come at a better time. His first sparked Tottenham’s comeback, and his second, a beautifully timed dink over the Villa keeper, showcased his skill and confidence. “Nice dink finish—I enjoyed that one,” he added while smiling.
“When we play well, we’re dangerous,” he said. “We’ve had great games, but keeping that level up all season is the goal. Today, we showed what we’re capable of.”
