Dominik Szoboszlai Insists Liverpool Need to Improve Despite 2-0 Win Over Ipswich Town
Liverpool's new season began with a solid 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town, thanks to second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.
However, despite the positive result, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has emphasised that there is still room for improvement in the team’s performance.
Szoboszlai, who played a key role in the match, acknowledged that while the three points were crucial, the team needed to be more prepared from the first whistle. Reflecting on the game, he said as Liverpool's official website quoted: "We are happy about the three points.
What we learned is that we should be ready from the first minute. But also, after we came out in the second half, we showed a good reaction, scored an early goal with Jota, and then one more with Mo. So, we are happy to take the three points but also we have to learn some stuff."
The Hungarian international noted the stark difference between the two halves. The Merseyside club struggled to assert dominance in the first half, but after the break, they exerted more control over the game.
Szoboszlai commented: "It’s hard, we would always like to be intense, have the ball, play forward, and make them run, but it’s not always working. In the second half, I think we mostly controlled the game, we had chances, and we were intense. We won the balls. That’s what we have to do from the beginning."
Szoboszlai also discussed the tactical adjustments under new head coach Arne Slot, who has tweaked the midfield setup. "We played differently a little bit because we played with one No.6 and two No.8s, with one of the No.8s dropping as a No.6.
"Now we played with one No.6, one No.8, and one No.10, and I had the role of the No.10. But still, sometimes I can drop, sometimes I can stay. It’s just different.
"I think I have more offensive work with the ball, but without the ball, I still have to do my stuff anyway, so the same as last season," he explained.
As Liverpool continues to adapt to the new system, Szoboszlai believes time and experience will help the squad gel and fully integrate Slot’s ideas. "Of course, we had quite a long pre-season but not all of the guys were there, so I think we need time until we come together and we know each other in this system as well.
"Last year we showed that we know each other, but now it is quite a little bit different system and also style of playing football. But I think with time, we’re going to get to know each other," he concluded.
Liverpool fans will be encouraged by the early signs of promise, but Szoboszlai’s call for improvement underlines the team's awareness that they must elevate their game as the season progresses.
