Updated: May 26

English football, with its storied legacy and fierce competition, is a testament to the pursuit of glory and the lion-hearted spirit of its clubs and their fans.

In the chapters that follow, we’ll dive into the heart of English football's exciting journey, where cheering fans, iconic players, and gleaming trophies have always come together to shape the essence of greatness.

One burning question stands out amidst the excitement: which club stands at the top with the most trophies and reigns supreme among the most successful English clubs in history? Can you guess who holds the top spot?

These Clubs Hold the Record for the Most Trophies in England, Making Them The Most Successful English Football Clubs in History

1. Liverpool (69)

Leading the pack is the Merseyside club, Liverpool, boasting 69 trophies. The Reds continue to leave their mark with a trophy cabinet overflowing with domestic league titles, FA Cups, League Cups, and European triumphs. From the 1970s and 1980s under Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley to the eras of Kenny Dalglish, Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez, and more recently Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's commitment to excellence has secured its place as one of the most successful English football clubs, exemplified by their recent Carabao Cup win at Wembley in February 2024 in Klopp's final season.

2. Man Utd (68)

Hot on Liverpool's heels are their arch-rival, Manchester United, with 68 trophies. The Red Devils' journey to success has been marked by iconic moments, from the "Busby Babes" era to the dominance of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign. With a blend of homegrown talent and international stars, Man United have consistently challenged for honours, securing numerous league titles and memorable European triumphs, including two UEFA Champions League titles.

Noteworthy managers such as Ron Atkinson, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Erik ten Hag added trophies to the Old Trafford cabinet. The post-Alex Ferguson era has been below par. It remains to be seen whether the new chapter with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has taken over football operations after purchasing a 25% stake in the club for around £1.3 billion ($1.6bn), will herald a return to glory for the Red Devils. Their last trophy was the FA Cup, won on 25 May 2024, with Ten Hag's side beating local rivals Man City.

3. Arsenal (48)

In the pursuit of glory, Arsenal stands tall with 48 trophies. The Gunners have etched their name in history with a blend of stylish football and managerial brilliance. Under the guidance of iconic figures like Herbert Chapman, George Graham, Arsène Wenger, and now Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have lifted league titles, FA Cups, and memorable league triumphs. The invincible season of 2003-04, where they went unbeaten in the league, remains a testament to Arsenal's dominance during their peak. The Gunners last won a major trophy in 2020, beating Chelsea 2-1 to lift the FA Cup at Wembley.

4. Chelsea (34)

Chelsea, the West London powerhouse, holds the fourth spot with 34 trophies. The Blues' rise to prominence in the 21st century, fuelled by the financial backing of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, transformed them into a formidable force. Multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the elusive UEFA Champions League trophy all found a home at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's historical ability to attract top talent and adapt to evolving football trends was a hallmark. However, this changed in 2022 when a consortium of investors, led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and private equity giant Clearlake Capital, took over the club. Under the new leadership, they haven’t continued the trend due to a revamp at the club.

5. Man City (33)

Once dubbed the 'noisy neighbours' by Man Utd fans, Manchester City has evolved into a formidable force, gaining recognition beyond the noise. They have firmly established themselves as a footballing force with 33 trophies. The club's transformation over the past decade, fueled by substantial investment from Abu Dhabi royal Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and astute management, has made them a dominant force in English top-flight and European football.

Winning the club's first major trophy in 35 years, and their first league title in 44 years under Roberto Mancini was the dawn of their resurgence to the top. Manuel Pellegrini delivered their second Premier League triumph. Pep Guardiola's arrival marked a new era of success as they reached the summit of European football, making them one of the most successful English football clubs. The last trophy the Cityzens won was the 2023-24 Premier League title, a year after their treble season triumph. City are the first team in English top-flight history to win the title in four consecutive seasons, securing the league in 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24.

6. Tottenham Hotspur (26)

Securing the sixth spot with 26 trophies, Tottenham Hotspur has long been recognised as a force in football, amassing silverware through league titles, FA Cups, and European triumphs. Tottenham have not consistently displayed determination to challenge for honours, with their last trophy going far back to the 2007–08 season when they won the League Cup under Juande Ramos. Despite facing challenges, Spurs remain poised for future success, especially with the fresh managerial approach brought by Ange Postecoglou. A new chapter of trophy triumphs may be on the horizon.

7. Aston Villa (25)

Aston Villa, with 25 trophies, is a club steeped in history and tradition. The Birmingham-based club has experienced periods of domestic and European success, notably during the reign of manager Ron Saunders in the early 1980s. Villa's contributions to English football have left an enduring legacy, with the club maintaining its status among the most successful English clubs. The one wish Villa fans held for their current manager, Unai Emery, was to secure a top-four spot in the 2023-24 season, a feat he has achieved. Their next hope is for him to lead them to a trophy triumph.

8. Everton (24)

Everton, Liverpool's neighbour, boasts 24 trophies, including league titles and FA Cups, reflecting a proud history. Despite their undeniable impact on English football, their recent success has diminished. Facing challenges in the 2023-24 season, they were docked 10 points for exceeding financial losses and charged with breaching Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules. However, after the points deduction, they survived relegation under Sean Dyche's guidance. Their last trophy, the FA Cup, was won in 1995 with a victory over Manchester United, courtesy of a Paul Rideout goal.

9. Newcastle 14

Newcastle United possesses 14 trophies. While their glory days may be traced back to the early 20th century, including FA Cup victories, Newcastle United remains a club with a passionate fanbase and a desire to recapture past success. Their last trophy triumph was in 1955 when they won the FA Cup.

10. Nottingham Forest & Wolves 13

Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers share the tenth spot with 13 trophies each. Nottingham Forest's golden era under manager Brian Clough in the late 1970s saw them achieve remarkable success, including back-to-back European Cup triumphs. Wolves, a club with a storied history, has tasted success both domestically and internationally, contributing to their impressive trophy count.

While Liverpool and Manchester United battle for the top spot among the most successful English clubs, the narrative extends beyond numbers. Success in football is measured not in silverware but in the enduring legacies written by each club. The journey to supremacy continues, and the debate remains a cornerstone of English football lore.
