Erling Haaland Reflects on 100th Manchester City Appearance After Chelsea Victory
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland marked his 100th appearance for the club with a decisive performance in their 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Norwegian striker, who scored the opening goal, expressed his satisfaction with his personal milestone and the team’s solid start to the 2024-25 Premier League season.
Haaland, who has been a prolific presence since joining City, broke the deadlock in the first half with a well-placed strike. His goal was complemented by a second from former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic, securing all three points for the Cityzens.
In an interview with BBC Match of the Day, Haaland reflected on the significance of his 100th game for Manchester City. “It’s gone so quick. It’s ridiculous how quick it actually goes, it’s my third season now. I’m happy, especially now after the win,” he said. The striker highlighted the rapid progression of his time at the club and his contentment with the team’s performance.
Despite acknowledging that City are not yet in peak condition, Haaland was pleased with the team’s composure and effectiveness. “It’s the first game back and we’re not in perfect shape, but we did a really solid performance. We just stayed calm and played, it’s amazing to see,” he remarked. This sentiment underscores the professionalism and resilience City displayed in their season opener.
Haaland also touched on his encounters with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who was a constant physical presence throughout the match. “All the time he stamps on me, he pushes me and everything, not only him.
“I don’t know what they want but that’s what they do I guess,” Haaland noted. His comments reflect the intensity of the battle and the physical challenges he faced on the pitch.
Looking ahead, Haaland emphasised the importance of taking the season one game at a time. “We just won the Premier League so let’s take it game by game. It’s 37 games left, let’s not forget we won the Premier League and now we have won the first game of this season,” he said. This perspective highlights City’s focus and determination as they aim to defend their title.
Haaland concluded by expressing his enthusiasm for the season and the return of his teammates. “It’s amazing to have everyone back. We go from there,” he added. With his goal and overall performance setting a positive tone, Manchester City looks poised for another successful campaign as they continue their quest for Premier League glory.
In the past three seasons, Erling Haaland has netted 13 Premier League goals in August, surpassing Chelsea's total of 11 goals as a team during the same period.
It's also worth noting that the Norway international has scored 64 goals in 67 Premier League appearances. No player has scored more since his Premier League debut. Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has the next-most goals in that time with 38 in 71 games.
