England forward Harry Kane reckons the 2020-21 campaign is a more open season.
FT: Spurs 2-0 Man City
Tottenham skipper Harry Kane has lauded their “fantastic performance” against Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s Lilywhites secured a 2-0 win against the Cityzens at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, thanks to goals from South Korea international Heung-Min Son and Argentina midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens failed to capitalise on the opportunities they created in the game while Spurs were clinical in their masterclass counter-attacking system.
Following the victory, England striker Kane expressed his delight at how their ‘game plan’ yielded the result.
“Fantastic performance, we knew it was going to be a tough game," he Sky Sports.
“We had a game plan to play as a unit. Everyone worked their socks off today. We took our chance, Sonny, with a great goal. And then we knew it would open up in the second half.
“I knew if I dropped deep then the centre-backs would come with me and Sonny could run in behind. We dropped deep, probably more than we needed to, but we changed that at half-time.
“It’s a season where you’ve got to do all it takes to win games. It’s going to be an up and down year. There’s no better feeling when you win. We’ll enjoy it, but we know we’ve got a long way to go.”
Kane also admitted that Spurs have room for improvement, adding that the 2020-21 campaign ‘is a more open league’.
“We’re doing well, there’s still parts we can improve on, the 27-year-old said. “We’ve got a lot of tough games to go. It’s a more open league. Like any season, whoever can put a good spell together will have a good chance of winning.”
While speaking to BBC Match of the Day Kane reflected on his partnership with Heung-min Son’s on the pitch.
He said: "Sonny has been clinical this season. The first goal was really good.
"Different spells in the game we created good chances, we have a great understanding and when he finishes the chances like he is it is great for Tottenham Hotspur."
It is the first time since August 2014 that Tottenham will finish a day top of the Premier League, and also the first time they have won back-to-back league games against City since October 2016.
