Lampard 'not getting anywhere ahead of myself' after return as Chelsea interim boss.

Lampard, who scored 211 goals in 648 games at Chelsea, has returned to the helm at Stamford Bridge for a second time.

Frank Lampard says that he is 'not getting anywhere ahead of myself' and he will 'focus on the job in hand' after he was named Chelsea's caretaker manager for the rest of the 2022-23 season.

The former Chelsea midfield ace secured a surprise return to Stamford Bridge, replacing Graham Potter, who was axed last weekend.

The West London club confirmed that they will go through an "exhaustive process" to find the right coach during the summer.

"I want to do the best possible role I can and after that, we will see what happens," the 44-year-old said. "I am not getting anywhere ahead of myself.

"I know there is a lot of talent in this squad. I am excited to work with that talent and help them. That's why I'm here."

When asked if he will become the permanent boss assuming he leads the Blues to Champions League glory, Lampard, who previously managed Chelsea from July 2019 until he was sacked in January 2021 replied: "It won't be my decision so again I don't want to jump forward to that.

"I understand I will get asked that question a lot. I have my eyes wide open. The important thing for me is to park that and focus on the job in hand."

Chelsea are currently 11th in the Premier League standings, 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, and Lampard's first game will be away to Wolves on Saturday before their Champions League quarter-final first leg against La Liga giants Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said after Lampard's appointment: "We want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.

"We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line."
