Liverpool boss Klopp - "I'm really happy that we could bring Gakpo in."

Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Liverpool's new signing Cody Gakpo, adding that the Netherlands international is a "massively interesting package" for the Reds.

The Merseyside club announced the signing of 23-year-old Dutch forward Gakpo, who will officially become a Red on Sunday when the January transfer window opens.

However, Klopp says he will be happy to play Gakpo anywhere across the frontline to boost Liverpool's attacking prowess.

"He can play in any of the front four positions," the German said, ass BBC Sport reported. "He's a young player with a lot of potential and we were very interested to get him in.

"It's big for us and it's big for him as well because he's a really interesting package.

"He's in a really good run of form in the league and obviously at the World Cup. We believe in our process when players come here, in how we can help players make a step forward. This one is massively interesting."

There were stories suggesting that defender Virgil van Dijk was key in Gakpo signing for Liverpool but Klopp has quashed those reports, saying Gakpo had already made his mind up to move to Anfield.

"We didn't need Virgil to do that," he said. "It's a nice moment when you are Liverpool manager and get to speak to someone and think you have to convince them to sign, but you realise it's a home run when you talk to them.

"We've been working on the deal from two to three months ago. It is special to have done it so early and with nothing coming out, which is very, very helpful."

Former Aston Villa, Norwich City, and Chelsea striker Chris Sutton said of the Liverpool new recruit: "Cody Gakpo is an excellent signing for Liverpool and I'm looking forward to seeing how he fits into their attack when his deal goes through in January."

Liverpool marked their return to Premier League action with a convincing win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Boxing Day, and they host Leicester City at Anfield on Friday the 30th.
