Liverpool Captain Van Dijk: 'I Think We Should Make Some Signings'

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed concerns over the club's lack of transfer activity as he enters the final year of his current contract.

With the Premier League season fast approaching, Van Dijk candidly shared his thoughts on the team's need for reinforcements, suggesting that new signings are essential for Liverpool to remain competitive in the upcoming campaign.

Speaking after Liverpool's 4-1 victory over Sevilla at Anfield, which marked the beginning of the Arne Slot era, Van Dijk acknowledged the importance of bolstering the squad.

"Obviously, I think we should make some signings based on how long the season will go," Van Dijk said. "I am fully confident and have trust in the club that they will do the right thing and get the best possible squad to compete in every competition."

Van Dijk's remarks come amid uncertainty surrounding his future at the club. Despite being a key figure in Liverpool's defense, the Dutch defender has yet to receive a contract extension offer as his current deal enters its final year.

The situation is compounded by similar contract issues involving star forward Mohamed Salah and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, who also have just 11 months remaining on their deals.

Reflecting on the changes under new head coach Arne Slot, Van Dijk expressed satisfaction with the team's progress but remained cautious.

"So far, so good," he commented. "We have communication with each other and a lot of tactical meetings where we see what we can improve. The finer details are very important in order to improve our game, and I think that's what we all want."

Despite the positive results in pre-season, Van Dijk emphasized the need for Liverpool to learn from last season's shortcomings, particularly the lack of consistency and injuries that hampered their campaign. He also highlighted the mental challenges of overcoming a difficult year, including his disappointment following the Netherlands' Euro 2024 semi-final loss to England.

As the transfer window deadline approaches, Liverpool's new sporting director Richard Hughes, who joined from Bournemouth in June, faces increasing pressure to secure new signings.

The lack of additions to the squad has raised concerns among fans and players alike, with Van Dijk's comments underscoring the urgency of the situation.

With the season opener against Ipswich just days away, the clock is ticking for Liverpool to address these concerns and ensure they have the depth and quality needed to challenge for titles on multiple fronts.
