Liverpool dominated the game against Brentford on Sunday and had plenty of quality, despite the absence of Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita, and Sadio Mane, who are representing their countries in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Brazil midfield marshal Fabinho said their Premier League win over Brentford on Sunday will give Liverpool FC confidence going forward.
The Reds got back to winning ways with a 3-0 win against Brentford at Anfield, thanks to goals from Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Takumi Minamino.
Jurgen Klopp’s side last won a Premier League game a month ago when they sealed a 3-1 home victory over struggling Newcastle United.
The victory over the Bees yesterday moves the Merseyside club into the second spot in the English top-flight, 11 points table-toppers Manchester City, who have won 12 league games on the trot.
However, Fabinho lavished praise on their performance against Brentford and was pleased they got all three points despite the absence of Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita, and Sadio Mane, who are representing their countries in the Africa Cup of Nations.
"In general, it was really good, midfielder Fabinho said: "We needed these three points and a good performance so it was nice to do it in front of our fans. It will be good to grow our confidence.
"It's always important to score first and in the first half, so my goal just before the end of the first half was important for us. We scored the second goal then after that, we played with much more confidence.
"It's always nice to score here at Anfield. When I can help the team in the offensive part of the pitch it's always important for me as well.
"The team played really well with the ball. The front three played really well. We created a lot of opportunities to score. It is a chance for everybody to show their quality and step up. We did that today."
Left-back Robertson: "The gap is too big to look at at the moment"
Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson says he won’t be looking at the gap between Liverpool and Man City but he is confident they will give the title race a go. "Every team who has managed to get points of Brentford has had to be patient," the Scot said. "They are a quality, well-organised team. "We had a good few chances in the first half and we knew we could hurt them potentially on set pieces. That goal settled the crowd and I thought in the second half we were pretty dominant. "It could have been a couple more. Diogo Jota hit the post, Bobby Firmino had a few chances."
When asked about the second goal that he assisted, the left-back replied: "Alex told me that he was getting the run at the back post if I hit it early, so he would have got an earful if he wasn’t there for it!" On his thoughts about the title race, he said: "Man City are a fantastic team – one of the best in Premier League history – we have closed a bit, but we have to concentrate on winning games. The gap is too big to be looking at for the moment. We are up against one of the best and we will give it a go and try and pick up as many points as possible." The win gives the Reds a boost heading into the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday... if the game goes ahead.
