Liverpool's start to the 2024-25 Premier League season has been nothing short of impressive. Under new manager Arne Slot, the Reds find themselves at the top of the table heading into the international break, boasting six wins from their first seven league games.
But what has really set this Liverpool team apart is their defensive solidity. With just two goals conceded and five clean sheets in their opening seven matches, Slot has built a defensive wall that has made Liverpool one of the toughest teams to break down.
Yet, while their early-season form has been stellar, the real question is: can Slot's defence carry Liverpool through the tougher tests that await them?
Slot’s Defensive Revolution
When Arne Slot arrived at Anfield, many wondered how he would follow in the footsteps of the legendary Jürgen Klopp. Klopp's reign brought attacking football filled with intensity, but Slot has introduced a new dimension to the team. Known for his tactical flexibility and defensive discipline, Slot’s Liverpool have shown more control and balance in matches.
Led by the ever-reliable Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, Liverpool's defence has been nearly impenetrable. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, while known for their attacking prowess, have also shown a renewed focus on their defensive duties under Slot. The result? Liverpool have faced just 64 shots this season, a stark contrast to the 101 they faced at the same stage last year.
A Familiar Defense with New Tricks
Interestingly, Slot hasn't overhauled the defence. Instead, he has fine-tuned the existing unit, making subtle changes to improve their organisation and discipline. The partnership between Van Dijk and Konaté has thrived so far, and the fullbacks have found a balance between bombing forward and staying compact when needed.
Slot’s tactical shift has been noticeable, with Liverpool maintaining more control in their defensive third. They no longer rely solely on relentless pressing to win the ball back; instead, they are more measured, choosing when to press high and when to sit back. This newfound balance has made them harder to break down and allowed them to dictate the tempo of games more effectively.
But Have They Been Truly Tested?
Despite the defensive success, some might argue that Liverpool have yet to face a true test. Five of their six victories have come against teams in the lower half of the table, and their lone defeat came against Nottingham Forest, a team struggling for form. Slot himself has acknowledged that tougher fixtures lie ahead and that his side will need to prove themselves against the league’s elite.
After the international break, Liverpool will face in-form Chelsea and title rivals Arsenal in back-to-back matches. These games will provide a clearer picture of whether Slot’s defensive setup can hold firm against more potent attacking forces. While they’ve excelled against the lower-tier sides, it’s against top teams that title credentials are truly tested.
The Alisson Concern
Adding to Liverpool’s challenges is the recent injury to their star goalkeeper, Alisson. The Brazilian shot-stopper has been instrumental in their defensive success, making crucial saves and commanding his box with authority. His absence, due to a hamstring injury, could be a significant blow.
However, Liverpool do have capable replacements in Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros. Kelleher, who has filled in admirably in the past, is expected to step up again. Jaros, who made his debut in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, showed promise, but the question remains whether they can fill the void left by Alisson in high-stakes matches.
Can Defense Win Liverpool the Title?
Sir Alex Ferguson famously said, "Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles." This quote might hold the key to their ambitions this season for Liverpool. While Slot has maintained Liverpool’s attacking edge, it is the newfound defensive stability that could be their greatest asset in the title race.
If Liverpool can maintain their defensive form against tougher opponents, they will be well-positioned to challenge for the Premier League crown. But with Chelsea, Arsenal, and other title contenders looming, the real tests are just around the corner.
The road to the title is long, and it’s not just about holding off weaker teams. Can Slot’s defence rise to the occasion against the Premier League’s best? Only time will tell, but if the early signs are anything to go by, Liverpool’s title ambitions are built on a foundation that looks as solid as ever.
