Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher questions Foden's role under Pep Guardiola at Man City.
Jamie Carragher has expressed his concern about Phil Foden's role in Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola's strategic plans as the new Premier League season approaches.
Despite being recognised as one of the most promising contemporary English talents, Foden has encountered challenges in securing consistent playing time due to the dynamic nature of City's starting lineup.
With an impressive track record that includes five Premier League titles, a Champions League victory, two FA Cups, and four League Cups, all achieved since his debut in City's senior squad six years ago, the England international has undeniably left his mark at the Etihad.
Nonetheless, last season saw Foden only making 22 starts in the English top flight, and he recently appeared as a substitute in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal. These circumstances have led Carragher to express uncertainty regarding the 23-year-old’s designated role within City's framework.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said as the Daily Mail quoted: 'Phil Foden is not young anymore. Three or four years ago, we were saying he was going to be the best English player.
'It almost feels like Jude Bellingham has become that player, where he's the one we build this England team around. Foden can't quite get into the England team and can't get into the Manchester City team.
'Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez have left, and they're playing in the Community Shield a week before the season begins, and he still can't get in the starting XI.
'We all know how good he is – what is it that's stopping him? Pep played Alvaréz behind Haaland – that's a position where Foden could play, but he still doesn't play him.'
