Manchester City secured the Uefa Super Cup by triumphing over Sevilla in a penalty shootout in Athens.
Despite their previous Community Shield loss to Arsenal on penalties, Pep Guardiola's Champions League victors experienced a turnaround in luck when Sevilla's Nemanja Gudelj hit the crossbar after nine precise penalties.
In an engaging match, City found themselves trailing after a commanding header by Youssef En-Nesyri granted Europa League holders Sevilla the lead in the 25th minute.
Both Sevilla's goalkeeper, Bono, and his Manchester City counterpart, Ederson, exhibited remarkable saves throughout the game.
The highlight of the match came in the 63rd minute when Cole Palmer, who was named man of the match, rose at the far post to level the score with a skillfully executed looping header from Rodri's cross.
This dramatic turn of events led to an intense finale, culminating in Guardiola's extensive collection of trophies welcoming yet another addition.
'We have to kick on'
Man City goalscorer Cole Palmer told TNT Sports: "Obviously losing on penalties [in the Community Shield] is never nice. To come here and win the Super Cup is lovely."
Is he at his best? "Not yet. It's early in the season. We just have to kick on from here."
'It was a brilliant feeling'
City midfielder Jack Grealish added: "It was unbelievable. The manager made it so clear to us before the game how much he wants this trophy. You want to win everything anyway but that gave us more of an urge. It was a brilliant feeling.
"Over the last 10 or 15 years this club has been so successful, they've won so many Premier Leagues, FA Cups, Carabao Cups. We've been waiting for this. To add another one to the collection. This is what I came here to do.
"It was so hot and humid. They made it hard for us, fair play, they're a good team.
"Getting the break at half-time, getting some words from the manager was important. We changed a few things. A good night all around."
On Cole Palmer, he said: "That's what you have to do as a young lad. I was in that position at Villa. You have to perform when given the chance and he's done that. He's such a nice kid, I'm so happy for him.
"We'll go home tonight. We have another game in three days. Straight to recovery and then back to the Premier League."
