Man City have taken command of the Premier League title race by moving eight points clear at the top of the table.
Phil Foden was proud of his Manchester City teammates after they beat Brentford 1-0 to tighten their grip at the top of the Premier League table, ending 2021 on a high.
With Chelsea being held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton earlier on Wednesday and Liverpool losing 1-0 to Leicester on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens made sure they did their job by seeing off a resilient Brentford side.
England international Foden scored the only goal at the Brentford Community stadium to extend City’s gap at the top of the English top flight to eight points.
Foden calmly finished off a superb cross from Kevin De Bruyne 53 seconds after the hosts came close to opening the scoring but Ederson reacted well to keep out a cross that bounced towards the City goal off defender Ruben Dias, before Yoane Wissa's deflected strike was cleared off the line.
The visitors doubled their lead just after the break when De Bruyne and Foden linked up again but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Laporte also found the net late on and his goal was also ruled out by VAR as Manchester City ended the year at the top of the league table.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after game, match-winner Foden said: "It was an important win today. Brentford made it really difficult. They are a physical team and are dangerous off set-pieces. We had to keep going to the final whistle. I am proud of the team for doing that. "I have had a few this year that have been ruled offside so I wasn't too confident. I thought I went a bit too early, but thank god the goal counted. I am really happy. There were a few when I went a bit early and was offside. We could have won by more. We kept working hard. "Round Christmas you have to keep your foot on the gas and keep focused. This team is doing that. "Wherever the manager puts me, I will do my best for the team. I started on the left. It is good I am adaptable. "This is the most challenging league in the world and it goes to show that you can drop points at any time. The team remain focused and we're happy." The previous two occassions (in 2011-12 and 2017-18) City ended the year at the top of the table, they went on to win the title.
