FT: Man City 1-0 Wolverhampton.
Raheem Sterling expresses delight at scoring 100 Premier League goals.
VAR check ruled Joao Moutinho had illegally blocked Bernardo Silva's cross, despite replays showing it hit the Wolves midfielder on his armpit.
England international Raheem Sterling scored a penalty to register his 100th Premier League goal and hand Manchester City a vital win against a 10-man Wolverhampton Wanders on Saturday.
Referee Jon Moss blew his whistle as he thought Bernardo Silva's cross was blocked by Joao Moutinho’s hand and VAR also confirmed that was the case, despite replays showing that the ball hit the Wolves midfielder’s armpit before his arm.
However, Sterling calmly fired the ball from the spot past goalkeeper Jose Sa in the 66th-minute, and it was the 27-year-old's 100th Premier League goal.
Wolves were already frustrated when Raul Jimenez was shown two yellow cards in the space of 30 seconds just before halftime as the away side went down to 10 men after working really hard to keep the Cityzens from scoring. In the end, City were clearly the better side on the cold Saturday afternoon as they registered 24 shots, with keeper Jose Sa making a few crucial saves. The visitors shouldn't have any complaints but would be disappointed with the penalty decision. Kilman was close to levelling the scoreline towards the end of the game but City shot-stopper Ederson reacted quickly as he punched the ball over the bar. Wolves have not been able to score in their past four games and have only registered one goal in their last six. While Pep Guardiola’s side have now won six Premier League games on the bounce to maintain their place at the top of the English top-flight table.
'We knew we had to keep patient'
City goalscorer Raheem Sterling told BT Sport they had to be patient in order to seal three points: “Every time we play Wolves at home it’s always a difficult one. They’re always a difficult side to break down.
“[Scoring 100 Premier League goals] is a lovely achievement. There are some fantastic players on that list. I’m really honoured to be in it now.
“We knew we had to keep patient. They kept it really tight, but we knew if we kept playing we’d get an opportunity – and we did.
“Wolves are always a difficult side to play against, home and away. Each game has its different challenges. We’ve always found it very difficult to break Wolves down and it was the same again today.
“We keep saying ‘next game’. That’s all we can keep doing. We need to do the same in midweek.”
