Manchester United midfield ace Bruno Fernandes insists the Red Devils need to do better as they continue to find their feet in the 2020-21 campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s boys finally secured their first home win in the English top flight when they hosted West Bromwich Albion on Saturday evening.

Former Sporting Lisbon star Fernandes found the net from the penalty spot in the second half as they sealed a narrow win against Slaven Bilić’s Baggies at Old Trafford.

The win moved United to ninth spot in the Premier League table, seven points behind league leaders Spurs with a game in hand.

However, while speaking to BT Sport, the Portuguese acknowledged it was a “tough game” and asked his teammates to seize their chances when in front of goal.

"It was really important to us to win this game because we need the points,” Fernandes who joined the Manchester club in January said.

"It was a tough game. We can do a lot better. We created a lot but we have the quality to do better."

On the penalty he 'conceded' early in the second half, he said: "I felt I touched the ball and it was the second contact."

And, asked to reflect on having to retake his penalty, the 26-year-old replied: "It's not good. You need to do it on the first one. I'm not happy. I scored the second one but I didn't the first one."

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day on his penalties, the Man Utd match winner explained: "I know what I have to do, I'm not happy for missing the first one. The most important thing was winning the game, it doesn't matter how we win.

"You have to score the penalties. It doesn't matter if 50% of my goals are from penalties, it's because I take it. It doesn't matter the way you score and as you see it's not easy to score a penalty. I see a lot of teams losing finals on penalties so it's important and it's part of the game."

When asked about West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone's performance, Fernandes replied: "I think he played well. We created a lot of chances but of course, he did a really good job. We have to do much better in the final third, but the keeper did a great job today.

"It doesn't matter the results, we have to win every game. You need the mentality to win every game. It was a tough game and it doesn't matter if we play well. The most important thing is the three points. You are seeing maybe the top six clubs having tough games but it is a tough situation as some teams started late."
