Man Utd goalkeeper David de Gea - 'We lost control.'

Updated: Jan 20, 2023

Manchester United missed out on the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal as they played out a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday, and an unhappy David de Gea questioned why they “lost control of the game.”

Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils were on course to secure three points after Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock at Selhurst Park before half-time.

Moments before United took the lead, Palace striker Odsonne Edouard came close to opening the scoring with a thumping effort but goalkeeper De Gea tipped it onto the bar and out for a corner.

The second half was quite tight, with United having more possession but not clinical enough to get a second, while Palace utilised their counter attacks, winning free kicks and creating half chances like when Marc Guehi’s header was saved by De Gea.

However, two minutes towards the end of the game, Michael Olise struck a stunning free kick that ensured both teams shared the spoils on the night.

And De Gea who had no chance of stopping the strike in the second-half stoppage time revealed his thoughts while speaking to Sky Sports.

"We lost control of the game and then they start to create chances and they scored from the free kick," the Spaniard said.

"If we want to win in these games, we have to control them until the end. We dropped two points today.

"I was pleased with my save in the first half and I thought it was over me so I just touched it with my fingers and then we scored a few minutes later so it was good. The feeling at the end was not so good because we didn't win.

"They scored the goal and in the end, they deserved the point."

When asked about Casemiro's yellow card, De Gea replied: "Big blow to lose Casemiro for Sunday. I don't get it why Arsenal don't play as we have to play in the same week and they don't. Now we are missing one of our best players. I don't understand. Now we miss him for a big game and it is a big loss for us."
