Mark Lawrenson: Who Thrives Under Ruben Amorim at Manchester United?

A new dawn is upon Manchester United with Ruben Amorim stepping into the manager’s seat, but as former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson suggests, change isn’t easy for everyone.

"Ruben Amorim is going to breathe life into this squad," Lawrenson said confidently. "I don’t need stats to tell you—watch how much sharper they’ll look this weekend. It’s one of those moments where everyone raises their game."

Amorim’s high-pressing 3-4-3 system promises excitement, but it’s also a radical departure from the slower, more conservative play some players are used to. For one, Casemiro—a linchpin in midfield—might not find this style to his liking.

"You look at Casemiro, and if they’re pressing and pushing up the field, that’s not his ideal setup," Lawrenson pointed out. "He’s been better lately, sure, but does he have the legs for it? Amorim might have to make some tough calls."

But while some may struggle, others could shine under the new manager's vision. Harry Maguire, for example, might find a lifeline in Amorim’s back three system.

"If Harry Maguire knocks on Amorim’s door, there’s a chance here," Lawrenson explained. "As the central figure in a back three, he’d be comfortable. It’s just that half a yard of pace he’s missing. But with quicker players on either side, it could work."

Amorim’s arrival promises plenty of adjustments, and while it might take time for the squad to adapt, the buzz around Old Trafford is undeniable. The question is: will Sunday’s match against Ipswich Town mark the beginning of something special, or will it expose just how much work is ahead?
