Newcastle United maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a dramatic 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at a packed St James' Park.
The hosts took the lead in the 37th minute as Harvey Barnes scored with a superbly controlled finish after Lloyd Kelly’s precise pull-back from the left flank.
The hosts appeared to be in control, but Tottenham fought back and equalised in the 56th minute. The goal came as a result of a misfortune for Newcastle, with Dan Burn inadvertently slicing a shot by Brennan Johnson into his own net, following a deflected effort by Pedro Porro that hit the crossbar.
Despite Tottenham’s increased pressure, including a near-miss from James Maddison and a shot over the bar by Johnson, Newcastle regained their lead with 12 minutes remaining. Joelinton played a pivotal role, initiating a counter-attack and setting up Jacob Murphy. Murphy’s low cross found Swedish forward Alexander Isak, who scored the winning goal.
In addition to the thrilling match, Newcastle's win was further celebrated by the return of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali, who made his first Premier League appearance since serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.
Tonali, who had previously featured in a Carabao Cup tie against Nottingham Forest, received a warm reception from the home supporters when he came on as a substitute in the second half.
Newcastle’s victory keeps their unbeaten run intact and underscores their resilience and ability to secure important wins at St James' Park, reinforcing their strong start to the season.
