Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman says Manchester United can end their trophy drought by winning the 2022-23 Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils' last piece of silverware was the Europa League back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

Since that Europa League final victory over Ajax five years ago, United have spent over £660million on players, and have reached four semi-finals and two finals: the FA Cup in 2018, which they lost to Chelsea, and the Europa League in 2021, losing a penalty shootout to LaLiga club Villarreal.

Speaking ahead of United’s clash against championship club Burnley, Osman told BBC Radio 5, Erik ten Hag’s team need to attack the League Cup with the right attitude.

“The noises coming out at the moment seem to speak of renewed confidence, togetherness, a desire to win silverware,” Osman said.

“For such a huge club to go more than two years without a trophy is unexpected - 2017 was their last trophy.

“This is something they can aim for. They won't win the Premier League this season but this is a competition they could win if they play well, attack the competition in the right manner and get a bit of luck.”

‘Moving Ronaldo on was vital’

When quizzed about United divorcing Ronaldo, he replied: “ I think moving Cristiano Ronaldo is a big step closer for [Erik ten Hag getting United to where they want to be].

“He's said recently that he identified that he needed characters to push the club in the right direction and he seems to believe that's the case now that he's moved Ronaldo on.

“We'll only see that in the coming weeks. They left going into the break in a confident manner and I'm sure these United fans are keen to see it.”
