Paul Scholes Questions Manchester United's New Season

Paul Scholes Voices Concerns Over Manchester United's Prospects and Key Issues Ahead of New Season

Ex-England midfielder Paul Scholes has expressed scepticism about Manchester United's prospects for the upcoming season. Despite some fan optimism fueled by recent off-field changes and new signings like Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirzkee, Scholes is not sharing the excitement.

In a candid moment on The Overlap's Fan Debate, Scholes said: “I’m struggling to get excited.”

He criticised United's midfield, saying: "We were talking beforehand about the middle of the pitch being an area that was just f***ing empty."

He added that Casemiro’s ageing legs and tactical adjustments involving Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes had not worked out as hoped.

On United’s defensive issues, Scholes expressed concern about injuries, noting that Yoro has already been sidelined for three months and questioning the fitness of key defenders like Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Maguire, and Lindelof. However, United could still improve at the back with potential new signings like Matthijs de Ligt.

He was also blunt about goalkeeper Andre Onana, saying: "I still worry about the goalkeeper... a couple of the goals he conceded against Liverpool, I worry to death about him."

Manchester United will face local rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday, August 10th, as they prepare for the 2024-25 Premier League season.
