PSG and RB Leipzig shared the spoils, meaning City sit top of their group, by a point, with games against PSG and Leipzig left to play.

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City deserved their victory against Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Phil Foden opened the scoring at the Etihad in the 15th minute, but the England international’s goal was cancelled out by a John Stones own-goal two minutes later as the first half ended in a draw.

In the second half, the Cityzens moved up a gear as goals from Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, and Gabriel Jesus sealed a 4-1 win for the homeside.

The result means City sit top of their group by a point as they edge closer to securing a spot in the last-16 of Europe’s elite competition after RB Leipzig scored a late penalty to seal a 2-2 draw with PSG.

Pep: We played really good football.

Following the win, Guardiola told BT Sport: "Fully deserved. In the first few minutes, we scored a goal but after conceding we dropped a little bit.

"The second half was really good. A good game, good victory. We need one point to go through, three points to win the group."

When asked about the assistance given to them as per Leipzig sealing a draw with Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG, and the Spaniard replied: “We (at Man City) help each other. What we've done these years... when you're at Manchester City, you realise nobody will help you.

“Everything to do, we've done it. When you're in high-ranking and big clubs, I understand maybe. Here no. When we win, we do it.

"All the titles I won before were because I was at big clubs. Absolutely, the pressure is higher [in winning things with City]. The fight to win the hierarchy in the Premier League is good.

"Every game is tough. They changed the shape we played in Belgium. We played really good football. I liked how we played."

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte admitted their opponents gave them a tough game but he was pleased they got the result they wanted.

The Spain international said: "It was tough. We're very happy with the result.

"It's always difficult in the Champions League. Club Bruges are a good team. They gave us a lot of difficulties.

"I'm very happy to play alongside John [Stones]. We've known each other for a long time and we're happy to play together. There aren't many times we play in the same game.

"I'm happy today for the win."
