Pochettino praises Chelsea defender Reece James.

Defender Reece James is set to be involved in Chelsea's second Premier League Summer Series fixtures on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino has given his backing to right-back Reece James as he reckons the England international can become Chelsea's captain one day.

Pochettino, who is now at the helm at Stamford Bridge following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter last season, also revealed that he is hoping the Blues' academy graduate can start his preparation for the 2023-24 season in their pre-season friendly match against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Reece James (23) made his first-team appearance for Chelsea back in September 2019 and has been a key member of the Blues ever since, winning the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

'He is one of the possibilities. We are talking from day one about his objectives and how he was in the last few years at the club,' Pochettino said as chelseafc.com quoted.

'He feels Chelsea, he came from the academy. He is one of the profiles, one of the players that can be the present and future captain of the club.’

Speaking of James' late return to training in the USA following his recovery from illness, Pochettino said of the 23-year-old: ‘Yes, of course, it's good to have him back.

'He is a very important player for us and it’s good to have a player like him back. Hopefully, tomorrow he can play.’
