Manager Ralf Rangnick made six changes to the side that played out a 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Monday.

Ralf Rangnick said it was key that Manchester United stars raised their energy levels when they hosted Burnley on Thursday night. The Red Devils ended 2021 with a comfortable 3-1 win over Burnley at Old Trafford, thanks to first-half goals from Scott McTominay, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. Aaron Lennon pulled one back for the visitors before half-time, but the Clarets didn’t have en guile to secure a comeback, though, they showed few signs of fightback that could help them climb up the Premier League table. Following the win, Rangnick told Amazon Prime: “As expected it was a very tough physical game against a team who play very physical. We also showed the qualities we have in our team. It was important today to raise the energy level.

“The whole team performance was a lot better, I was pleased with the performances of our wingers. Jadon did well and Mason. Eddie and Cristiano, the work effort was amazing. “I wouldn't say fourth is the minimum. It is about taking next development steps. Now eight games in a row without a defeat. It is about taking next steps.

When quizzed about buying new players in the winter transfer window, the German said: “My focus is on the current players and we have enough players in the squad.

“Transfers in the winter only make sense if they increase the quality. So far we haven't spoken about that.”
