Manchester City are gearing up for contract negotiations with Erling Haaland in the coming months, aiming to extend the record-breaking striker's current deal, reports the Daily Mail.
While Haaland still has four years remaining on his contract with the Treble-winning City team, there is a strong desire to extend it for at least another season.
The negotiations are expected to result in an increase in Haaland's already substantial £400,000-a-week wages, along with performance-based bonuses. Securing a fresh deal for the 23-year-old would deal a significant blow to Real Madrid's aspirations of luring him to the Bernabeu, especially given their interest in Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe.
Real Madrid had pursued Haaland intensely last year but were left empty-handed as the Norwegian striker opted for a £51 million move to the Etihad club. Haaland proceeded to make English football history by scoring 52 goals in all competitions, establishing himself as a vital part of the City squad both on and off the pitch, much to Pep Guardiola's delight.
Despite Real Madrid's continued interest, Man City remain steadfast in their belief that Haaland can achieve his ambitions with their team. The negotiations may also involve discussions about potential release clauses, with two such clauses initially included in Haaland's initial contract, one of which was dependent on Guardiola's future, which he extended last November.
While Haaland recently had a goalless outing in City's dramatic 3-1 Champions League win against RB Leipzig, he has already notched eight goals in the current campaign and enjoys a positive rapport with Julian Alvarez, earning praise from the coaching staff.
Haaland is set to lead the line against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, as the Cityzens aim to recover from last weekend's loss at Wolves and extend their lead over last year's closest challengers by four points.
