Manchester City snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Wolves in stoppage time, with John Stones’ late header sealing the win after a hard-fought battle at Molineux. Wolves had taken a surprise early lead through Jorgen Strand Larsen, but Josko Gvardiol’s equaliser and Stones' last-gasp effort ensured City continued their winning form.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Stones reflected on the importance of set pieces, which ultimately proved decisive for City. "We have been trying super hard to improve our set pieces and make the most of them," Stones said. "Today was a new focus and attitude towards them."
The match-winning header, initially ruled out for offside before being awarded after a review, was a moment of personal satisfaction for the defender, who highlighted the significance of such goals.
"Hopefully this is the start of many more. It is a vital part of the game at both ends of the pitch and really pleasing for me personally to get the winner after such a difficult game," Stones added.
Despite the initial confusion when the goal was disallowed, Stones remained confident in the decision. "I thought it had been chalked off. I tried to speak to the ref but he had a lot of people around him. For me, it is the right call. Obviously, I am going to be biased, but I think it should stand."
Stones’ late winner secured three crucial points for Man City, keeping them within reach of Liverpool and Arsenal as the Premier League title race begins to gather momentum. Meanwhile, Wolves remain winless, despite their valiant performance against the defending champions.
