New recruit Romeo Lavia has unveiled the reasons behind his decision to opt for Chelsea FC over Liverpool FC, as the young midfielder solidifies his future with the West London powerhouse.
Lavia, who is from Belgium, formally inked a seven-year contract with Mauricio Pochettino's Blues. The deal was sealed following his successful completion of a comprehensive medical evaluation on Thursday.
In spite of the acquisition of Moises Caicedo's from Brighton, Chelsea maintained their focus on reinforcing their midfield roster. In a swift manoeuvre, they managed to outpace Liverpool in the race to secure Lavia's signature.
The 19-year-old had been the subject of persistent transfer speculations linking him to both Chelsea and Liverpool throughout the summer. During a certain phase, it seemed like Lavia might find his way to Anfield, but the proposed move didn't materialise, with Southampton declining multiple offers from Liverpool.
Ultimately, Chelsea capitalised on the situation, orchestrating an agreement with Southampton and effectively securing Lavia's services. In this twist of events, Liverpool faced disappointment in their pursuit of the talented player.
In his first interview after signing for Chelsea, Lavia revealed what led him to which join the Blues: 'I think the project and the ambitions of the club were key factors, but also the history behind it so, these three factors were determining my decision.
Speaking to the club’s website, he added: ‘I’m really happy join Chelsea and be a part of this exciting project. It’s an amazing football club with a great history and I’m really excited to get started.
‘I can’t wait to meet all my new teammates and build chemistry together to achieve great things together.'
Lavia will wear the number 45 shirt for the Blues, which is the same number he wore during his one year with Southampton.
