Souness - Man City's Rodri Deserved the Ballon d'Or

Graeme Souness has celebrated Manchester City midfielder Rodri's achievement of winning the Ballon d'Or, asserting that "the importance of the holding midfield position for the overall success of a team has been fully appreciated."

He emphasised that, unlike previous winners who were often forwards or headline-grabbing stars, Rodri's recognition highlights the often unseen contributions of midfielders, who play a pivotal role in a team's success.

Reflecting on the changing perception of midfield roles in modern football, Souness stated in his Daily Mail column: "Only in recent history has the importance of the holding midfield position for the overall success of a team been fully appreciated."

He noted that Rodri's award is a testament to his significant impact on the pitch, contributing to Man City’s success while showcasing the necessity of a strong defensive presence in the midfield.

Praising Rodri, Souness pointed out the midfielder's versatility and essential contributions, saying, "What it would have been like to have played on these modern surfaces, as Rodri can."

He encouraged Rodri to continue developing his game, particularly in terms of goal-scoring, adding that he should look to add even more goals to his impressive play.

Souness concluded his remarks by expressing his delight for Rodri's recognition, stating: "I’m delighted that Rodri has won the Ballon d’Or." This acknowledgement doesn't just honour Rodri's individual talent, it underscores the evolving dynamics of football, where the value of all positions, including those often overshadowed, is increasingly recognised.
